Get ready for the ultimate summer experience at Beyond The Pale this weekend, June 21st-23rd. This incredible festival based in Glendalough, Wicklow is a haven for foodies and festival-goers alike.
We’re stoked to be attending this weekend; of course, to see the incredible acts set to play (Jungle and Daithi in particular!) but mostly for the fantastic Beyond The Plate; the festival’s food area curated by esteemed Irish Times food journalist Ali Dunworth, focusing on this year’s themes of culture, customs and craic.
The focus at Beyond The Plate is always to present food and drink in fun, tasty ways suited to a festival like Beyond The Pale and this year is no different. Forget ‘fussy’ cooking demos of the past, Beyond The Plate is all about embracing the craic while celebrating all that we love about Irish food and drink.
This year, the fantastic award-winning food pop-up Bahay is the exciting featured restaurant – and, Beyond The Pale festival guests have a fantastic opportunity to take part in a one-off weekend dining experience unlike any other: Bahay’s Midsummer Feast.
This will be a sit-down, bookable restaurant created by Alex O’Neill and Richie Castillo (also authors of the incredible Blasta Book: MASARAP), and it will offer a brand-new festival dining experience in a space curated to feel like you’re stepping into a Filipino Bahay Kubo, a type of house indigenous to the Philippines that is an icon of Philippine culture. Expect delicious sharing plates and dishes from Bahay, bright Filipino flavours, using the best Irish ingredients.
You can book in for this exclusive experience via itsbeyondthepale.ie.
It gets even cooler: Bahay will be flipping the space into their very-own stage called Chez Spice each night rocking a line-up showcasing local talent and DJ collectives like Reclaim the Mainframe, Intrinsic Rhythm, Foxgluv and Chez Spice with an emphasis on vinyl. The late-night space will have a full bar with Filipino cocktails, and some street food options for those who want to sample some grub. This element doesn’t require tickets and kicks off at 8:30.
And that’s not all on the food front! Ali will be presenting a line-up of talks and demonstrations from some of Ireland’s leading food and beverage personalities like Holly White; Caitlin Ruth (author of Funky); Dáire Ó Lúing and Dee Laffan. There’s Beyond The Fence; a series of foraging walks with Samuel Arnold Keane; three food-based plays: Splitting the G: A Controversy, a play by Shamim de Brún, Ham & Cheese by JP McMahon and BAKE! by Paul Curley; AND live Podcasts: Flop Culture with Fionnula James and The Centre Cut Podcast.
If you haven’t booked your spot for Bahay yet, now’s your chance!
