If you’re a fan of dairy products, you might be pleasantly surprised to learn that they can be frozen. Simply follow our handy guide and find out how to keep surplus dairy products fresh for longer.
Use an airtight container and be sure to leave a couple of inches at the top as the milk will expand when frozen. Thaw the milk in the fridge and use it within 2-3 days.
Once it’s been frozen, cheese won’t be any good on a cheeseboard, but is still perfect for adding into sauces, soups, chillies, or pasta dishes. Freeze it in blocks or pre-grated in sealable plastic bags.
Pour buttermilk into sealable bags in the volume you use it in most often, e.g. 400ml for a favourite brown bread recipe. Label them and lay them flat on a baking tray to freeze. When they’re frozen, the flat packs are easy to store. Just defrost in the fridge overnight before using!
Butter lasts for ages in the fridge anyway, but if you find yourself with loads, then freeze it in its original packaging. This also works for flavoured butters (try adding garlic, chilli, blue cheese, red wine, herbs or spices); just wrap tightly in cling film or pop into a freezer-safe tub.
Are you a smoothie enthusiast? You can freeze yoghurt in ice cubes! Once frozen, transfer the cubes to sealable bags to store in the freezer. Simply add a cube or two to your morning smoothie.
