If you love chocolate (who doesn’t?), you might have already spotted Tony’s Chocolonely on shelves with its vibrant packaging and satisfyingly chunky bars. But there’s much more to this brand than just tasty treats – they’re on a mission to make the cocoa industry fairer and free from exploitation. And guess what? Their latest Annual Fair Report proves they’re making real progress!

A Sweet Success in Cocoa Ethics

Despite rising cocoa prices shaking up the industry, Tony’s Chocolonely is sticking to its promise of fair wages and ethical sourcing. Their new report highlights a 71% year-on-year growth in cocoa bean volume, meaning more positive impact across their supply chain. Even better, cases of child labour in their long-term partner cooperatives have dropped to less than 4% – a staggering improvement compared to the industry average of 47%!

Fairbruary: The Month to Choose Fairtrade

The report’s release comes at the perfect time, coinciding with Fairbruary, Fairtrade Ireland’s annual campaign encouraging shoppers to pick Fairtrade products throughout February. Tony’s Chocolonely has proudly held Fairtrade certification in Ireland since 2019, but they go even further with their own 5 Sourcing Principles:

Traceability – Knowing exactly where their cocoa comes from.

Higher prices – Paying farmers more than the industry standard.

Long-term commitments – Ensuring stability for cocoa farmers.

Strong partnerships – Building fair and honest relationships.

Enhanced quality & productivity – Supporting better farming practices.

Through these principles, 20,296 farmers in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire are now receiving a living income price for their cocoa, marking a 14.4% increase from last year. Now that’s a choc-full of impact!

Douglas Lamont, Chief Chocolonely, acknowledges the challenges posed by rising cocoa prices but remains optimistic: “In spite of that, Tony’s Chocolonely is growing, and our impact on the ground in West Africa is growing too. This report is proof that our model can work at scale, delivering real benefits to cocoa farmers and their families.”

Thinking of treating yourself to some Fairtrade goodies for Fairbruary? Or perhaps planning a sweet gift for Valentine’s Day? Make it chocolate with a conscience by choosing Tony’s Chocolonely.

From their iconic chunky bars (RRP €4.50) to snackable Littl’ Bits (RRP €3.49), Tony’s offers indulgence with impact. You can find them in Tesco, SuperValu, Centra, and many independent retailers across Ireland.
