Makes around 48 cookies using a 4cm gingerbread man cutter


This beautiful Kilner jar filled with a ready-to-bake cookie mixture of dry ingredients, and handwritten instructions for adding butter, eggs and treacle, makes the perfect Christmas gift! 


1 tsp ground ginger

2 tsp ground cinnamon

½ tsp ground nutmeg

¼ tsp ground cloves

½ tsp allspice

½ tsp salt

550g plain flour

1½ tsp bicarbonate of soda

100g dark brown sugar


To gift: 

1l jar with clip-on lid

Coloured string, baking twine or ribbon

  1. Combine the ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, allspice and salt. Add the spice mixture to the bottom of the jar. 
  2. Continue layering with the flour, followed by the bicarbonate of soda and then the dark brown sugar.  
  3. Write the following instructions on the gift tag: “Mix 125g butter, 170g black treacle and 2 large eggs. Mix in the gift jar and chill the dough in the fridge for one hour. Preheat the oven to 180˚C/160˚C fan/gas mark 4. Roll out the dough, cut out cookies and place on a parchment-lined baking tray. Bake for 8-10 minutes until the edges just begin to brown. Allow to cool completely.”
