What is flexitarianism?

We at Easy Food are all about making conscious choices when it comes to eating: the best food tastes good and makes us feel even better. This is why we’re releasing a special issue, Flexitarian: Easy Recipes and Guides to Eating Less Meat, on sale now.

What’s flexitarian, you might ask? Well, it’s more or less in the name. The flexitarian diet can be broadly summed up as a part-time or flexible vegetarian diet; it advocates eating less processed meats and refined sugars, and more plant-based proteins, whole grains and fresh produce. And if you feel like having a burger or meaty meal? Go ahead! By consciously reducing your intake of mass-produced, chemical-laden meats, you can opt for nutrient-dense, ethically sourced meat and fish options, thereby reaping most of the benefits of a vegetarian diet without being too strict on yourself. By eating more plants and less meat, it’s suggested that adherents to the diet will not only lose weight but can improve their overall health, lowering the rate of heart disease, diabetes and cancer, and are likely to live longer as a result.

Just last month, US News and World Reports listed the flexitarian diet as the third best overall diet/eating regimen in the world for its easy-to-follow guidelines and emphasis on healthy eating choices that are sustainable in the long run.
