Shannon Peare: Food Stylist, cake queen, master of Test Kitchen tunes
Shannon started baking when she was three, in her Granny Redmond’s kitchen with her auntie Eileen. “We used to make biscuits at 7am… my poor auntie! I would call the sieve ‘the fizz’. This is where my passion for baking began.”
Starting out in the food industry when she was 15, Shannon has since worked in restaurants, hotels and bakeries all over Dublin, and studied pastry and baking in DIT Cathal Brugha Street.
Shannon started out as an intern here at Easy Food, helping out with the food prep and testing recipes in our kitchen. “One day, I asked whether I could try styling food, and that was where it all began. I’ve learnt all of my styling wisdom from the amazing team at Easy Food. We have such a fun, food-loving team that pretty much every day is a fun and creative one.” You know Shannon’s in the Test Kitchen when there’s music blaring and plenty of singing going on – and a cake in the making.
“Easy Food also gave me an opportunity to begin writing when I presented Caroline an article on the basics of making sponges.” That was the birth of Shannon’s now-monthly column, Tips from the Easy Food Test Kitchen. “I love that I get to develop, bake and style all of my own recipes, as well as giving people some tips and tricks of the trade.” As our resident baking expert, she’s an invaluable source of information on all things sweet.
Shannon says her favourite recipe would have to be her Mam’s raspberry cheesecake. “It’s a rare treat but, when she makes it, it doesn’t hang around long! Made with Digestives, cream cheese, cream, ice cream and jelly, it is a true favourite in our house.” And her favourite utensil? An extra long spatula! I have a big Kitchen Aid at home, so an extra long spatula is required to reach the bottom of the bowl. Even when using smaller bowls, the extra long option means you won’t get your hands as messy.”
