Dublin is set to become the newest home of the “World’s Best Steak Restaurant”…
Hawksmoor, the steak restaurant group started in London 16 years ago that recently opened “the hottest steakhouse in New York” (Eater) and ranked Number 1 in the ‘World’s Best Steak Restaurants’ list, has been looking for a home in Dublin for some time and plans to open its doors in the iconic National Bank on 34 College Green in 2023.
Co-Founder Will Beckett, “We’ve been coming to Dublin for years to spend time in one of our favourite cities for food and drink, always keeping an eye open for a beautiful space. When we saw the former National Bank on 34 College Green we fell in love. It’s only taken us 16 years to finally get from London to Dublin, but we can’t wait to open Hawksmoor in what we think is the most hospitable city in the world. We’re hoping to open in spring next year, subject to planning.”
Co-Founder Huw Gott, “A lot of time and thought have gone into this design for Hawksmoor Dublin, as we’re hoping to celebrate the original fabric of the National Bank building by restoring original features, such as the banking hall’s grand 40-feet cast-iron dome and ornate plasterwork, and reinstating elements like cast iron railings similar to those originally installed in the 1880s. Our goal is to restore it to its former glory, enhance features that have been shielded from public view in recent decades, and enable as many people as possible to enjoy this beautiful historic building.”
In 2006, two childhood friends, Will Beckett and Huw Gott opened a restaurant serving steaks from traditionally-reared cattle and sustainably sourced seafood, alongside old school cocktails in a then-unfashionable part of London and changed steakhouse standards in that city. Since then, Hawksmoor has grown to a 10-restaurant group, including the most recent, wildly successful launch in New York, praised by The New York Times, The New Yorker and critics across NYC’s world-renowned restaurant scene.
With a focus on sustainability, charity and local sourcing, Will and Huw’s obsession with quality and ethics has led them to collaborate with and highlight individuals and companies who share their beliefs, from local farmers and fishermen to local, national and international charities fighting food poverty as well as to their restaurants being given the highest rating for sustainability by the Sustainable Restaurants Association. Hawksmoor is the only hospitality company to have featured in the annual Best Companies to Work For list every year for the past decade and the company has also recently become carbon neutral, with a plan to be Net Zero by 2030.
