SuperValu introduces compostable shopping bags

We love to see Irish retailers getting on board the sustainability train, which is why we were so pleased to hear that SuperValu has become the first Irish retailer to introduce reusable, compostable shopping bags.

We know that reusable shoppings bags have been around for quite a while; however, from September 9th, 100% compostable shopping bags will be available in all SuperValu stores for 89c. This means that, when shoppers have used their bags to death, they can simply throw them in their compost bin, saving the environment one bag at a time.

This announcement follows the introduction of fully compostable fruit and vegetable bags for customers in 2018, to date resulting in 2.7 million single-use plastic bags being removed from stores.

Both initiatives are just two steps SuperValu is taking as part of its sustainable packaging strategy to make 100% of its own brand and fresh fruit and vegetable packaging recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025.

The supermarket is continually looking for ways to reduce or replace plastic; from the new compostable SuperValu salad bowls, now in store, to the largest loose fruit and veg offering in any Irish supermarket. Further loose items will be trialled in SuperValu stores and some stores are already selling loose coffee, spices, tea, pulses and cheeses.

We love seeing more and more Irish retailers making the move towards sustainability and can’t wait to see what they achieve next!
