Having opened its doors to the public on July 31st, Smithwick’s Experience Kilkenny celebrated its official opening yesterday and sounds like a must-visit for anyone with an interest in either history or beer!
Visitors are invited to take a step back in time to the year 1231 and witness the medieval origins of brewing on the site of the Abbey of St. Francis. Costumed actors, holographics and other interactive elements move the tour forward through time to the arrival of John Smithwick in the 1700’s and then on to the present day.
Located in the old Victorian brewing building on Parliament Street in Kilkenny City, the €3.5m multi-sensory and interactive experience aims to immerse visitors in the history of Smithwick’s, Ireland’s oldest beer brand, the heritage of the Smithwick’s family and its place in Kilkenny, a city steeped in history and brewing tradition.
The tour brings the brewing process to life, with visitors having the opportunity to experience the smells, tastes and textures of the raw materials involved in creating the perfect pint of ale. Living portraits of key Smithwick’s family members talk amongst each other and tell the truly amazing story of how Smithwick’s went from being a small local brewery to a beer famous the world over.
Smithwick’s Experience Kilkenny is open for tours from 10am-5pm daily, and there’s a 10% discount on tickets bought online at www.smithwicksexperience.com. We’re looking forward to our visit!
