Last Thursday I was lucky enough to try Afternoon Sea in the Cliff Townhouse, a truly different afternoon tea experience. I don’t have much of a sweet tooth and am always the person at afternoon tea who just wants more sandwiches, so a completely savoury — and all-seafood! — selection was right up my alley.
The menu includes a range of delicious bites: potted monkfish with toasted sourdough croutons, half a lobster, crab claws, a pot of mussels, Harty’s Oysters and Irish smoked salmon. In place of the usual tea or coffee, a cup of smooth lobster bisque with cream and whiskey completes a deeply satisfying experience.
The Cliff Townhouse has found the perfect partner for this Afternoon Sea — a glass of Billecart-Salmon Brut, a light, fine and harmonious Champagne, made with a blend of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier from three different years and sourced from ‘La Marne,’ renowned as one of the best Champagne regions. A chilled glass of this is a fantastic accompaniment for all of the fresh seafood — I tested it thoroughly so you can be sure!
This is definitely one to try for seafood lovers, those who prefer the savoury side of afternoon tea or anyone looking for a posh treat that’s a little different.
Afternoon Sea at Cliff Townhouse is served daily from midday until 3pm, all year around (except for the festive season), and costs €40 per person, or €55 if you decide to go for that glass of fizz. Treat yo’self!
