September always feels like a new phase of the year, with the evenings suddenly darker and a new school calendar in play. Whether you’re looking to squeeze as much goodness as possible out of the last of the summer produce, getting school lunches prepped for the first time in months, cutting back on your budget after a mildly irresponsible summer (same!), or simply on the hunt for some new comfort food inspiration, you’ll want to get your hands on the September issue of Easy Food. Read on for a taste of what’s in store…
1. Cheap and cheerful
It’s that time of year when many of us start to tighten the purse strings after a summer of gleeful spending on all things foodie and fun, so as always, we’re including our Weekly Menu Planner to see you through a whole week’s worth of easy, tasty meals.
2. School’s in
We’re not quite sure how it happened, but yes — it appears to be September already. We can’t do much to help you organise stationery or uniforms, but we can assist with the food end of things. Find fun new lunchbox ideas that are anything but boring, and check out our Easy Juniors feature for an after-school snack that older kids can make for themselves.
3. Season’s bounty
As summer draws to a close, there’s still plenty of fresh Irish produce in season. If you’re out of ideas for using up peas, beetroot or celery, we’re dishing up some fresh inspiration, while we’ve also been experimenting with using late summer berries in a variety of both sweet and savoury dishes. Check out the strawberry croissant pudding, below, or the stunning little blackberry and red wine cupcakes that we couldn’t resist putting on our cover.
4. More than a filling
We’ve been keeping that pesky doctor away in the sweetest possible way with our back-to-basics apple bakes.
5. Make-ahead magic
Our Test Kitchen experts chat through another of our old reliables – Pyrex® glassware that moves effortlessly from freezer to oven to fridge, making it easier than ever to prep meals ahead of time, then make the most of your leftovers.
6. Mince charming
Tired of making the same few meals from beef mince? You’ll love our creative new ways to use this endlessly versatile family favourite.
7. Quit playin’ games with my tart
Food Stylist Shannon — our very own Queen of Tarts — has been making us all drool with her stunning tarts.
8. Buon appetito
In this issue, you’ll find some new pasta ideas that the whole family will love — both from our own Test Kitchen and from new cookbook, Peace, Love, and Pasta. Quick midweek meals just got a whole lot more interesting.
9. Rise and dine
Need some inspiration on how to start the day right? We’ve included some healthy breakfast recipes sure to put a smile on your face, whether it’s a busy Tuesday morning or a lazy Saturday brunch.
10. Eat Ireland
In this month’s edition, Deputy Editor Jocelyn has been chatting to an Aran Island cheesemaker who’s as passionate about his island home as he is about his fabulous cheeses. Her recipe for baking his gorgeous feta-style goat’s cheese is simple, but impressive — ideal for a lunch or easy starter.
11. From the butcher’s block
Our local butcher gives us an insider’s perspective on buying and cooking pork, and we pull together a quick and creamy pork chop recipe that’s ideal comfort food for the darker evenings ahead.
The September issue of Easy Food is on sale from September 4th — make sure to get your hands on a copy!
